The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC)-Campbell Clinic Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program is proud to announce its 100th anniversary in 2024. Across the globe, more than 700 surgeons have been trained through the Campbell Clinic program to relieve pain, treat bone and joint conditions, and restore well-being.
Established in 1924 by Dr. Willis C. Campbell, the UTHSC-Campbell Clinic Residency Program has become synonymous with excellence in orthopaedic education. Today, this five-year intensive specialty physician training program is a collaboration among the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), the Campbell Clinic Foundation and the renowned Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics. The program has defined itself by advancing orthopaedics, leading across the field, and providing patients with the highest quality of care.
“This centennial is not only a milestone for the residency, but also a testament to the continued dedication of our faculty, staff, and partners,” said Dr. Frederick M. Azar, Campbell Clinic Chief of Staff. “Together, our unwavering commitment to training and nurturing the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons has solidified this program as a leader in the field and a driving force behind advancements in orthopaedic medicine.”
Since its inception in 1946, the Campbell Clinic Foundation has facilitated the teaching and training of physicians and managed the residency program. As an education trust formed by Dr. Campbell’s partners, the Foundation moves lives through medical education, orthopaedic research, and community health outreach.
“We stand ready to steward and advance this legacy of education and patient care,” said Foundation Executive Director Jenny Koltnow. “Donations to the Foundation impact patient outcomes and the future of musculoskeletal health, funding the Center of Excellence for Cerebral Palsy Care & Research at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital; educational opportunities; international medical mission trips; and local medical outreach programs that ensure access to quality orthopaedic care.”
Throughout its long history, the UTHSC-Campbell Clinic Residency Program has trained generations of orthopaedic healthcare professionals who have gone on to make groundbreaking contributions in their field. The program has earned an international reputation for producing superior training and educational resources, including Campbell’s Operative Orthopaedics, the “bible of orthopaedic surgery,” published in 11 languages; innovative research that has yielded profound improvement in patient outcomes and care; and highly skilled and compassionate orthopaedic specialists across various sub-specialties – including foot and ankle; spine; pediatric; elbow and shoulder; sport medicine; total joint replacement; hand; and orthopaedic trauma.
“Through the years, our program has epitomized excellence, fostering the growth of generations of orthopaedic surgeons who embody the values of compassion, innovation, and dedication to patient care,” said Dr. James Beaty, Chairman, UTHSC-Campbell Clinic Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering. “As we honor our past, we look forward to the next century of shaping the future of orthopaedic surgery through unparalleled education and transformative experiences.”
“Looking at the success of my career, I can trace it back to the opportunity I had to be a resident at Campbell Clinic; that was such a calling card for being in the orthopaedic world,” said City of Franklin, TN Mayor Ken Moore, M.D. (Class of 1975). “It commanded immediate respect if you said, ‘I trained at Campbell Clinic.’”
Celebrations marking the program's centennial in 2024 will include events and activities that honor the past, present, and future of orthopaedic surgery. These will include symposia, lectures, and reunions that bring together program alumni, faculty, and current and future residents.
